After 16 months in a Russian prison, Evan Gershkovich was released Thursday in the largest prisoner swap since the Cold War, orchestrated by the Biden administration.

Almost two weeks ago, Biden announced to the world he was dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. But just before he made that decision, the president made a call to his Slovenian counterpart urging them to make final arrangements to get the historic prisoner exchange over the line.

That swap included Gershkovich, former Marine Paul Whelan and Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, along with legal permanent resident Vladimir Kara-Murza. In exchange, Vladamir Putin insisted his hit man Vadim Krasikov, be released back to Russia.

Krasikov used the cover name Vadim Sokolov and was convicted by a German court for the 2019 assassination of a former Chechen commander near Berlin’s parliamentary building. He was in German custody.

President Biden had to convince German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to ultimately agree to Krasikov’s release. The government of Turkey facilitated the transfer of the prisoners.

‘I don’t think anybody here on the US side has a full, complete, contextual picture of why Krasikov was treated with the priority that he was by the Russian side,’ a senior administration official told Fox News.

‘I mean look, FSB [Federal Security Service] connection, paid assassin, ordered by the Russian Government to conduct the assassinations that he did… this is a bad dude, and a member of the Russian intelligence services. They obviously considered him an asset and wanted him back, and it was no small thing for the German government to let him go,’ the official said.

‘Lots of tough calls throughout this exchange and certainly Krasikov was one of the tougher calls leaders had to make,’ another official said.

‘This deal would not have been made possible without our allies Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway and Turkey. They all stepped up and they stood with us,’ Biden said at the White House Thursday.  ‘They stood with us, and they made bold and brave decisions, released prisoners being held in their countries who were justifiably being helped and provided logistical support to get the Americans home. So for anyone who questions whether allies matter, they do. They matter.’

Sullivan in a press briefing Thursday confirmed that no money or sanctions were part of the exchange.

When asked if the historic prisoner exchange would incentivize hostile countries to arrest more Americans, Sullivan said, ‘It’s a question that we grapple with every time that we look at the hard decisions involved in one of these exchanges.’

‘It is difficult to send back a convicted criminal to secure the release of an innocent American. And yet, sometimes the choice is between doing that and consigning that person basically to live out their days in prison in a hostile foreign country, or in the hands of a hostile power. So, from our perspective, we have assessed and analyzed that risk, and we have judged that the benefit of reuniting Americans and bringing people home, and also of vindicating the idea that the American president and the American government are going to do what it takes to protect and secure the release of innocent Americans, that that benefit outweighs the risk. And that’s how we proceeded,’ Sullivan said.

The White House on Thursday announced new defensive military deployments to help Israel defend itself against Iran and its proxies.

A brief statement on the matter came in a readout of a phone call between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Vice President Kamala Harris also joined the call.

Both leaders discussed efforts for Israel to defend itself against Iran and Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis in Yemen.

‘The President discussed efforts to support Israel’s defense against threats, including against ballistic missiles and drones, to include new defensive U.S. military deployments,’ the statement said.

During the call, Biden stressed the ongoing efforts to de-escalate broader tensions in the region.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have heightened in recent weeks following back-and-forth airstrikes.

On Thursday, Natanyahu said those who attack his country will ay a ‘very high price’ after confirming that Israel killed top Hezbollah and Hamas commanders in recent strikes.

‘Israel is in a state of very high readiness for any scenario — on both defense and offense,’ Netanyahu said. ‘We will exact a very high price for any act of aggression against us from any quarter whatsoever.’

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday said Venezuelan President the opposition, not socialist and Hugo Chavez successor Nicolás Maduro, won the country’s presidential election. Maduro has claimed victory and threatened the opposition since July 28, sparking widespread protests.

‘Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election,’ Blinken said.

Maduro is widely believed to have lost before declaring victory, and numerous regional governments have cast doubt on the results.

Government officials from Brazil, Colombia and Mexico have been trying to convince Maduro’s administration that he must show the vote tally sheets from Sunday’s election and allow impartial verification, a Brazilian government official told the Associated Press on Thursday. Doing so would dispel any doubt about the results, the official said. Argentina’s newly elected libertarian President Javier Milei has called for the anti-Maduro protests to continue.

On Wednesday, Maduro asked Venezuela’s highest court to conduct an audit of the election, but that request drew almost immediate criticism from foreign observers who said the court is too close to the government to produce an independent review.

Polls taken over the course of the summer consistently showed opposition candidate Edmundo González winning by double-digit margins.

When the National Electoral Council, which is controlled by Maduro loyalists, announced around midnight that Maduro had received 51% of the vote compared to main opposition candidate González’s 44% support, council President Elvis Amoroso said the results were based on 80% of voting stations and represented an irreversible trend.

‘Meanwhile, the democratic opposition has published more than 80% of the tally sheets received directly from polling stations throughout Venezuela,’ Blinken said. ‘Those tally sheets indicate that Edmundo González Urrutia received the most votes in this election by an insurmountable margin.’

‘The CNE’s rapid declaration of Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the presidential election came with no supporting evidence,’ the State Department said Thursday. ‘In the days since the election, we have consulted widely with partners and allies around the world, and while countries have taken different approaches in responding, none have concluded that Nicolás Maduro received the most votes this election.’

Since the election, protesters have taken to the streets to voice anger at the results, prompting a heavy-handed response by authorities in some instances. Blinken called for authorities to protect opposition leaders like González and María Corina Machado, the release of protesters who were arrested, and for the peaceful transition of power.

‘Now is the time for the Venezuelan parties to begin discussions on a respectful, peaceful transition in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law and the wishes of the Venezuelan people,’ Blinken said.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance’s ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ returned to the top spot as the No. 1 bestselling book in the U.S. this week — and sources close to the campaign told Fox News Digital it shows that voters are interested in getting to know former President Trump’s running mate.

Vance’s memoir, ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ which was originally published in June 2016, reclaimed the top spot on major bestseller lists this week, including The New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly and USA Today.

A film adaption of the memoir, released in 2020, also has seen an uptick in viewership since Trump named Vance his running mate. The film has shot up to the No. 9 spot on Netflix’s list of top 10 movies. A source familiar told Fox News Digital that viewers have watched nearly six million hours of the film.

Vance’s commercial success comes as pundits and many on the left have criticized him in recent days about a 2021 comment he made about women without children.

But a source close to the Trump campaign said the renewed success of ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ just shows that ‘everyday Americans are rushing to get copies of his personal memoir to get to know the man based on his own words — without any media filter.’

‘The mainstream media has been pulling their hair out, insisting JD Vance had a historically bad week on the campaign trail,’ said a source close to the Trump campaign. ‘In reality, millions of people who have completely lost faith in the media have rushed to buy copies of ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ or gathered with their family to watch the movie at home.’

More recently, Vance has dealt with headaches as an interview from 2021 resurfaced, in which he said, ‘We are effectively run in this country, via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they wanna make the rest of the country miserable, too.’

He then specifically called out Vice President Kamala Harris and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as being part of this group in that interview.

This week, the Harris campaign and various other prominent Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, actress Jennifer Aniston and others, blasted Vance, accusing him of devaluing women that don’t have children or can’t have them under normal circumstances.

Vance has said Democrats have taken his comments ‘out of context and blow it out of proportion, which is what they always do because they don’t have an agenda to run on themselves.’

A Vance spokesperson told Fox News Digital that ‘the leftwing media have twisted Senator Vance’s words and spun up a false narrative about his position on the issues.’

‘As he clearly stated, he was talking about politicians on the left who support policies that are explicitly anti-child and anti-family,’ Vance spokesperson Taylor Van Kirk said. ‘The media can obsess over it all they want, but he’s not going to back down when it comes to advocating for policies that protect parental rights and encourage people to have more kids.’

Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita also defended Vance, saying the critics are being ‘absolutely absurd.’

‘We’re about fighting for the working women of the United States, the forgotten people of the middle class. JD Vance is the perfect representation of that,’ LaCivita told Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade. ‘They know it. It scares the hell out of them… They’re going to peddle in fiction and we’re going to have to deal with it as we go forward.’

In the biggest prisoner swap with Moscow since the Cold War, the Biden administration on Thursday secured the liberation of 16 American and German nationals held prisoner in Russia and Belarus in exchange for the release of eight Russians.

The top of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s list was hit man Vadim Krasikov, who used the cover name Vadim Sokolov and was convicted by a German court for the 2019 assassination of a former Chechen commander near Berlin’s parliamentary building.

‘Krasikov is a high-ranking colonel in the elite Spetsnaz unit of the FSB,’ Rebekah Koffler, former DIA intelligence officer and author of ‘Putin’s Playbook,’ told Fox News Digital in reference to Russia’s intelligence agency the Federal Security Service (FSB).

‘Krasikov is a very high-value asset who will be debriefed by the Russian security services on the operation, how he got apprehended, what he learned during the interrogations in Germany, and everything the Russians are interested in,’ she explained. ‘These debriefings will help the Russians to make improvements in their operational tradecraft for Russian intelligence.’

Koffler also said it is likely the Putin operative will be used to train ‘would-be assassins for future operations, making them even more lethal and difficult to detect and apprehend. … Putin also wants to show to would-be recruits that he would personally get involved in getting his people out if they are caught. It’s a huge recruitment incentive.’

Reuters reported that Krasikov, who was born in Kazakhstan in 1965 while it was still part of the Soviet Union, became a specialist assassin while working for the FSB, according to Bellingcat reporting.

Despite multiple witnesses to his assassination of the Chechen commander, which was carried out in daylight, Krasikov pleaded innocent and maintained he was a St. Petersburg construction engineer visiting Berlin as a tourist who went by the name Sokolov.

Though he was never directly confirmed as an agent by Moscow, Putin indirectly spoke of Krasikov in 2023 when he expressed a desire to secure the release of someone who ‘eliminated a bandit in one of the European capitals.’

Ukraine’s Security Service helped investigators identify the Russian FSB agent after obtaining footage of the man during his second wedding held in Kharkiv in 2010.

According to Reuters reporting, Krasikov never recognized the court during his trial and frequently refused to listen to the translation of the proceedings provided to him.

Reports have suggested the prisoner swap would not have taken place without the release of Krasikov, placing an enormous weight on the shoulders of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

‘Our obligation to protect German nationals and our solidarity with the USA were important motivations,’ the German government said Thursday, according to a Reuters report.

President Biden also championed Germany’s efforts in the prisoner swap and said, ‘I particularly owe a great sense of gratitude to the chancellor.’

‘The demands they were making to me required me to get some significant concessions from Germany,’ he said. ‘But everybody stepped up. Poland stepped up, Slovenia stepped up, Turkey stepped up.’

‘It matters to have relationships. It really does,’ Biden added.

Among the prisoners set to return to the U.S. are Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former Marine Paul Whelan and Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, along with legal permanent resident Vladimir Kara-Murza.

The other 12 prisoners to be brought back from Russia are all German nationals who were held as political prisoners.

The massive swap involved at least seven countries over a number of months to pull all the Russian prisoners requested by Moscow from the U.S., Germany, Norway, Slovenia and Poland, the White House said on Thursday.

‘There has never been, so far as we know, been an exchange involving so many countries, so many close U.S. partners and allies working together,’ National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters.  ‘It’s the culmination of many rounds of complex, painstaking negotiations over many, many months.’

Biden called the historic swap a ‘a feat of diplomacy.’

‘Some of these women and men have been unjustly held for years. All have endured unimaginable suffering and uncertainty. Today, their agony is over,’ he said in a statement.

Who is Kamala Harris and what does she stand for?

We thought we got an idea of her worldview and policy positions when she ran for president in the 2020 race.

To tick down the list, she is on video saying that she:

*Wants to ban fracking.

*Wants to eliminate the fossil fuel industry.

*Wants to end all offshore drilling.

*Wants to abolish ICE.

*Does not support border wall construction.

*Does not support the Remain in Mexico policy.

But does support sanctuary cities.

*Supports reparations for slavery.

*Supports violent criminals voting from jail.

Supports expanding the Supreme Court.

*Supports redirecting resources away from police.

*Supports ending cash bail laws.

*Supports ending private health insurance:

And opposes Voter ID.

You get the point.

And now, apparently, Harris has reversed herself on many of these issues. But we haven’t actually heard her explain these flip-flops, of course. Instead, these reversals are being leaked to the press from her campaign via ‘unnamed sources.’

Which begs another question: It’s been more than 10 days since Harris secured enough delegates for the Democratic Party’s nomination, so why exactly hasn’t she taken one question from an actual journalist yet about any of her past positions on policy? She did ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ as her first interview as the presumptive Democratic Party nominee, and her handlers continue to give her the Biden treatment… where basically the strategy is to plead the Fifth all the way to Nov. 5th.

This strategy is unsustainable, of course. Team Kamala believes they can simply ride the current sugar high for the next 95 days or so without doing one single press conference or real interview. But here’s the thing: She still trails Trump on average nationally and in almost every swing state. The Harris team is allowing Trump to define her, which is quite easy to do, given her own comments in the past.

A microcosm of Trump’s strength versus Harris’ weakness was on display once again in Chicago during the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention on Wednesday afternoon.

The Republican nominee was treated with outright hostility by Rachel Scott of ABC News straight out of the gate, but Trump hammered home his points around illegal immigration impacting minorities through social services being drastically cut regarding sanitation, education and police to help pay to support those in the country illegally. Trump also underscored the cruel tax that inflation is to all communities, regardless of color.

Meanwhile, Harris decided to blow off the event and instead will do it by Zoom instead.

Why? Because her people know that if she ever had to take questions from an objective, prepared moderator, someone for example, like Fox News’ Harris Faulkner, it would be utterly disastrous to her campaign.

She simply does not have the ability to think or speak extemporaneously. And her policy positions are almost indefensible.

Ultimately, this race will come down to any debates Trump and Harris have. But here’s a prediction: Trump is arguing, rightly so, that he agreed to debate Biden, not Harris, on ABC in September. But now Harris is saying the debate agreement still stands.

No, it does not. Trump and Harris are supposed to debate now, making the prior agreement with Biden null and void.

Harris says she’ll still show up to the ABC debate regardless if Trump is there. I predict the former president will hold his ground, and the vice president will declare he chickened out while also declaring that there will be no more debates because Trump is ‘afraid’ of her, with the media cheering her on every step of the way.

And that’s the goal: Avoid Trump, and any substantive questions, at all costs. And try to eke out a win without ever being held to account.

So, who is Kamala Harris?

We may never truly know. At least not until after Election Day.

President Biden has called the prisoner swap deal with Russia Thursday that secured the release of The Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich, Paul Whelan and others a ‘feat of diplomacy.’

‘Moments ago, the families and I were able to speak to them on the telephone from the Oval Office. They’re out of Russia. Earlier today, they were flown to Turkey, and soon they’ll be wheels up on their way home to see their families,’ Biden said during an address from the White House. ‘This is an incredible relief for all the family members gathered here. It’s a relief to the friends and colleagues all across the country who’ve been praying for this day for a long time.’

‘The deal that made this possible was a feat of diplomacy and friendship. Multiple countries help get this done,’ Biden added. ‘They joined a difficult, complex negotiation at my request. And I personally thank them all again.’

‘All told, Russia has released 16 prisoners. Eight Russians who were being held in the West will be sent home as well. The 16 prisoners from Russia that Russia has released include four Americans, five Germans, seven Russian citizens who were political prisoners in their own country,’ Biden continued.

The president said earlier in a statement released by the White House that ‘three American citizens and one American green-card holder who were unjustly imprisoned in Russia are finally coming home: Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmasheva, and Vladimir Kara-Murza.’

Biden said ‘Russian authorities arrested them, convicted them in show trials and sentenced them to long prison terms with absolutely no legitimate reason whatsoever. None.’

‘Some of these women and men have been unjustly held for years. All have endured unimaginable suffering and uncertainty. Today, their agony is over,’ Biden also said.

‘I am grateful to our Allies who stood with us throughout tough, complex negotiations to achieve this outcome — including Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, and Turkey. This is a powerful example of why it’s vital to have friends in this world whom you can trust and depend upon. Our alliances make Americans safer,’ Biden continued.

‘And let me be clear: I will not stop working until every American wrongfully detained or held hostage around the world is reunited with their family,’ he added.

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested on March 29, 2023, while reporting on a trip to the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg and accused of espionage. The Biden administration declared him ‘wrongfully detained’ and The Wall Street Journal and U.S. government both emphatically denied the charges, calling them absurd on their face.

Whelan had languished in Russian custody for years. A well-placed source told Fox News that Turkish intelligence officials played a key role in mediating the prisoner swap.

The last time Russia exchanged prisoners with the U.S. was December 2022, when it freed basketball player Brittney Griner in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout. Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia for smuggling and possessing cannabis. Like in Gershkovich’s case, Griner’s harsh sentence was viewed as Russia effectively taking an American hostage to obtain leverage over the U.S.

Biden said Thursday during his speech that ‘It says a lot about the United States that we work relentlessly to free Americans who are unjustly held around the world.

‘It also says a lot about us that this deal includes the release of Russian political prisoners. They stood up for democracy and human rights. Their own leaders shoot them in prison. The United States helped secure their release as well. That’s who we are in the United States,’ he added. ‘We stand for freedom and liberty, for justice, not only for our own people, but for others as well. And that’s why all Americans can take pride in what we’ve achieved today.’

A top Republican warned on Thursday that the Biden administration’s choice to trade Russian criminals for detained Americans – Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and Marine veteran Paul Whelan – could be sending a ‘dangerous message’ to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, joined others in celebrating the releases, saying he was ‘thrilled’ to hear the detained Americans were coming home.

‘But I remain concerned that continuing to trade innocent Americans for actual Russian criminals held in the U.S. and elsewhere sends a dangerous message to Putin that only encourages further hostage taking by his regime,’ he added.

He further stressed, ‘We should also not forget those Americans who may still be held in Russia, like Marc Fogel and Ksenia Karelina, as well as those held in other countries, including Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and David Lin, who are held in China, and Ryan Corbett, who is held in Afghanistan. We must get all of them home to their families too.’

A senior administration official told Fox News on Thursday that the U.S. and Russia agreed to a prisoner transfer and the prisoners are now expected to soon be in U.S. custody.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, expressed his own relief at the planned release of Gershkovich and Whelan ‘after years of wrongful detention in Russia.’

‘The baseless charges, sham trials, and unjust imprisonment of these men is a stark reminder of Russia’s blatant disregard for human rights and its continued oppression of innocent Americans,’ he said.

In a joint statement, the Pennsylvania congressional delegation, including Democratic Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman, as well as Republican Reps. Mike Kelly and Guy Reschenthaler and Democratic Rep. Chris Deluzio, pushed the administration to include Fogel.

‘As news of a potential prisoner exchange is being reported, we urge that any swap include Pennsylvania’s Marc Fogel, along with Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich,’ they said.

‘Marc is a Pennsylvania teacher with severe health issues who has been unjustly imprisoned in a Russian prison for three years, and as the congressional members who represent Marc and his family, we have been pushing to bring Marc home as quickly as possible. As negotiations are ongoing with the Russian Federation, we respectfully request that any potential prisoner swap include Marc Fogel.’

Former Rep. Mike Rogers, q Republican Senate candidate in Michigan, where Whelan is from, responded to the news on X, writing, ‘I’m so grateful to hear that Paul Whelan is finally coming home to Michigan! This great news is long, long overdue, but will hopefully bring peace to the Whelan family who’s been through unimaginable pain these past few years thanks to Russia’s egregious actions.’

The long-awaited arrival of U.S.-made F-16s have allegedly landed in Ukraine, officials said Wednesday, a move that will help Kyiv revive its air capabilities in its war against Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly emphasized his country’s need for superior air support and aircraft since Russia invaded more than two years ago.

Despite international willingness to provide warplanes to Kyiv, the U.S. previously refused its F-16 technology over concerns it could escalate the war beyond Ukraine’s borders – a similar position it took with other wartime capabilities like long-range ATACMS missile systems and Abrams M1 tanks before Washington again capitulated.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, an ardent supporter of Kyiv, took to X to confirm the delivery and said, ‘F-16s in Ukraine. Another impossible thing turned out to be totally possible.’

Despite multiple reports citing U.S. intelligence officials, neither the Pentagon nor Ukrainian defense officials have officially confirmed that the sorely needed warplanes have been delivered.

Kyiv’s push to keep the F-16 arrival a secret is not a surprising decision given the security challenges the planes will prove for the war-torn state.

Ukrainian pilots have been training on F-16 systems in the U.S. and in Europe as they look to roll out a new defense with the modern warplanes.

However, Ukraine will also need to secure the planes while they remain on the ground as they are expected to be a top target for Russian forces looking to destroy the F-16s.

When asked about the arrival of the F-16s by reporters Wednesday, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said, ‘I’m certainly not going to talk about weapons capabilities.’

‘We have said, and said at the NATO summit, that the process of providing F-16s to Ukraine continues to move forward,’ he added. ‘We said that they will be operational by the end of the summer. We have no reason to doubt that.’

Zelenskyy has long emphasized the important role F-16s would serve in bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses as Russia continues to pummel the country with drone and missile strikes.

‘Last night alone, almost 90 ‘Shahed’ drones were shot down,’ Zelenskyy said in a Wednesday address to the nation.  ‘This is a serious result. I thank everyone for their precision: our mobile fire groups, fighter aircraft crews, anti-aircraft gunners, electronic warfare specialists — everyone.’

‘You have done an excellent job in the skies across many of our regions,’ he added. ‘It is also crucial to increase Ukraine’s skies defense capabilities.’

‘Kamala Harris: Weak. Failed. Dangerously liberal.’

That’s the tag line on the first campaign ad put up by former President Trump this week. Those closing phrases of the 30-second hammering of Harris ought to run a thousand times between now and November because they provide a great and memorable summary of the Vice President’s tenure in office. Until and unless Harris confronts her own record of failure and weakness, she will begin a steady drift down in the collective mind of the electorate.

Since Joe Biden got the hook almost two weeks ago, Vice President Harris has not given an interview with a serious journalist, much less held a press conference.  If she and her handlers had even minimal confidence in her ability to make it through even softball interviews with reliable Beltway anchors, she’d be on the air attempting to get ahead of the Trump Campaign’s definition of her as ‘weak, failed and dangerously liberal.’

But she doesn’t and they don’t. They know that one ‘typical Harris interview’ will cause the ice beneath her to break and the delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago from August 19th to the 22nd to bolt.

The ‘party’ is relieved that Biden got yanked, but more than a few of the party elders were angling for a ‘compressed primary’ because they know Harris is a terrible candidate. Former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have been tipped as among those in the ‘Not Kamala Camp.’ Too bad. Once the embittered Joe Biden, kicked to the curb again by Obama, endorsed Harris, it was her nomination to lose. And she is not going in the harm’s way of an interview until she is formally nominated.

We know why. We have watched her occasional media appearances over the past four years, and they seem to almost always end in laughter: her’s and the audience’s. Her’s is nervous laughter, a sort of giggle that attempts to mask her awareness of her own vacuity. The audience’s laughter is the sort of uncomfortable ‘ha ha ha’ that accompanies confusion if not cringing.

Harris is just not very good at explaining anything, much less expanding on her world view or her vision for the country’s future. Even her cliches land with a clunk: All the ‘unburdening,’ Venn diagrams and school buses cannot make up for a lack of unrehearsed rhetorical ability of the sort necessary in an interview or a presser.

She can, however, reliably read from a teleprompter which makes her a far better candidate than Biden. The ‘relief rally’ Harris benefited from in her poll numbers after Biden got tipped overboard was inevitable given that Democrats knew they were doomed if President Biden was renominated. Those relatively strong numbers will last through the end of August as the Democratic convention, even if interrupted by protests, will give Harris continued energy. Unless she gives an interview. She doesn’t have to as she can coast through these weeks of the Olympics with a rally here and a tarmac question there. Once the nomination is locked up, then the real campaign begins.

Eventually though, Harris has to talk to the press, even if it is the tame Manhattan-Beltway media elite. If she is not deterred by the deep anti-Israel and often anti-Semitic impulses of her party’s left wing and selects Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as her running mate, Harris will have a stand-in who is both smart and comfortable in front of a camera. Even with the estimable Shapiro as her sidekick, however, Harris is still going to have to talk about complex subjects at some length. That’s going to be her undoing.

The American electorate got head faked into a Biden presidency by the basement campaign he ran, one enabled by the COVID lockdowns. ‘We won’t get fooled again’ is more than an old rock-and-roll lyric. It’s a deeply held conviction among voters.

It is unclear to me why former President Trump would agree to debate Harris. He’s done the job already and she hasn’t.  His positions and record as president on the big three issues of inflation, immigration and Israel are well known. The electorate remembers the Trump years pre-COVID—correctly—as low inflation, high growth years, years of expanding peace and stability in the world. The Biden-Harris years? Not so much.

Harris, of course, hasn’t done the job for even a day. She’s shadowed it, though at arm’s length as Team Biden knew from the 2020 campaign forward that they had chosen poorly when it came to Harris. All that buzz about clearing a Supreme Court vacancy for her was not because of her reputation as a legal scholar. They wanted an electable understudy, not Harris. Justice Sotomayor didn’t take the hint.

Trump has the record and the confidence of his party and most independents. Harris has a much higher mountain to climb when it comes to credibility. On everything. With everyone. If she can’t knock out an interview a week beginning after the convention, the game will be over before it is begun.

‘Weak. Failed. Dangerously liberal.’ Add in ‘San Francisco Democrat’ and it’s all that Donald Trump and J.D. Vance need.
